This comprehensive study of Tuscan wine begins with an exploration of the rich past of the region, illustrating how the contributions of ancient civilisations such as the Etruscans continue to shape the landscape of Tuscan viticulture. The role of the region’s famous families, such as the Antinori, Frescobaldi and Ricasoli is also examined. The many autochthonous, traditional and international grape varieties that have contributed to Tuscany’s rise to the apogee of Italian wines, are discussed, including a section highlighting the influence of the region’s most famous grape, Sangiovese. Eby explores the region’s geology and shows how the topography and soils have affected the evolution of appellations and DOC/Gs.
