The Discovery of the Yorkshire Dales - Chris Park

THE YORKSHIRE DALES, so beloved of visitors today, was once remote, wild and undiscovered, invaded by settlers wholeft their stories in scars on the land and hints of their origins in the place names that remain. As the written word developed, a gradual trickle of explorers came to view the uncanny and the awesome, from natural wonder to ransackedabbey. They reported back on their travels and as word spread, the trickle became a constant stream. This unusual and beautifully illustrated book gives us a unique window on 600 years of Dales history. Looking through the eyes ofcontemporary writers, we can see how perceptions, attitudes and even the landscape itself have changed over time. What has remained the same is the grandeur, variety and sheer beauty of this stunning National Park. Part history, part guide and part joyous celebration, this unique book will enchant residents and visitors alike.
