Scottish Hill Names - Peter Drummond

Where does that hill's name come from - And how do you say it? This book answers those questions, exploring the origins and meanings of Scotland's hill names, their pronunciation, and the legends and stories connected with them. This thoroughly researched, fully revised and expanded new edition builds on the success of its predecessors and there is much new to enjoy: wider coverage of the Borders, a chapter placing Scottish hill names in international context, and older forms of many names drawn from 17th- and 18th-century maps. Drawn from Gaelic, Norse, Brittonic, Scots and Pictish tongues, Scotland's hill names carry over 500 years of social and cultural history. For anyone heading for the hills, this book opens the door to that fascinating world.
