Cultivating Calm in the Classroom - Corrin Watson

We often expect young people to self-regulate, but they have not always been taught suitable strategies and need support to rehearse these regularly, when they are calm. Equally, a dysregulated adult cannot help a child to calm and must learn how to regulate themselves. This practical resource promotes wellbeing for educators first, guiding adults to learn how to effectively self-regulate which, in turn, will support them as they co-regulate and help children to understand their emotions. Cultivating Calm in the Classroom delves into the science of the nervous system and the chemistry of emotional regulation, offering accessible guidance and actionable techniques to cultivate calm environments that promote emotional balance and connection. A toolkit of activities is provided for both adults and children, from breathing exercises and mindfulness to sensory play and structured movement breaks, to build resilience and belonging and enhance outcomes and overall wellbeing for all. This unique, practical and sensitively written book builds a deeper understanding of our nervous systems which will lead to impactful actions in the classroom. It is an essential resource for teachers in all settings looking to find balance and improved wellbeing within their busy lives.
