Two who spring to mind immediately are John Thomson who met his death while playing for Celtic in 1931 and Ronnie Simpson who was 36 when he won a European medal in 1967. The Canadian Joe Kennaway distinguished himself for many years in the 1930s, as did Willie Miller during the barren war years and the immediate aftermath. Both of these men were the epitome of reliability during years when everything else was changing. Long ago there was a mighty threesome of Dan McArthur, Davie Adams and the legendary Charlie Shaw who had a song written about him by opposition supporters! In more recent times, Pat Bonner distinguished himself for Celtic and Eire in the World Cup. Also the less happy goalkeepers as well. The one who was suspected of being drunk on New Year’s Day, the one who was suspected of taking bribes and the young reserve who was going to a game as a fan, given a lift by the team bus and ended up playing. All these and a few more are detailed in this book written by David Potter and Marie Rowan, two passionate Celtic supporters who have already written a great deal on the history of the club.
