Sir Christopher Wren (1632/1723) was one of Britain's most distinguished architects. Strongly influenced by French and Italian baroque styles after a visit to Paris in 1665, after the Great Fire of London destroyed much of the old city the following year, a huge opportunity became apparent for Wren. He produced ambitious plans for rebuilding the whole area, mostly rejected for a number of reasons. However, Wren did design 51 new city churches, as well as the new St Paul's Cathedral. Further commissions included the Royal Observatory at Greenwich, a hospital in Chelsea for retired soldiers, Trinity College Library in Cambridge, and the facade of Hampton Court Palace.
