The first generation of DMUs was introduced by British Railways in the mid-1950s as part of the modernisation programme. These were replaced by a second generation of units in the 1980s, many of which are still in service, but are slowly being replaced by new state-of-the-art designs to suit modern-day operations, passenger expectations and environmental considerations.
